West Coast Warriors secured their ninth win of the season with a 72-58 victory against East Freo Sharks in Round 10 of Gold Industry Group West Australian Netball League, on Sunday afternoon.
The Warriors were sitting on top of the ladder with eight wins and the Sharks right behind with seven wins.
The Sharks were off to a slow start, but heading into half time, it was still anyone’s game as goal attack Rose Aryang utilised her agility to close in on the Warriors head start, 33-28.
Shark’s coach Sue Gerrard said they had a couple of great and not so great quarters.
“It was a pretty awful start, but then we caught up in the second quarter. We just need to be more consistent with what we do.” Gerrard said.
The final two quarters proved to be difficult for the Sharks as Warriors’ goalkeeper Stephanie Cooper and wing attack Stacey Hein intercepted the ball numerous times for their team to score.
Warriors’ captain and mid-courter Helen Taylor ensured the Sharks wouldn’t get in her way with her speed through the court and long lob passes to get the ball to the post.
Warrior’s coach Lorraine Ward was impressed with the ball carrier’s performance today.
“Our focus was to put a lot of pressure on the ball carrier today and handovers and try and stop their feeders from getting ball, I thought we did that pretty good today.” Ward said.
In the goal circle, Warriors’ goal shooter Donelle Wallam continues to impress and provide plenty of opportunity for her teammates, scoring an impressive 60 of the Warriors 72 goals.
After securing top of of the ladder, yet again, Ward said she felt relieved after their victory.
“(It) feels a lot more comfortable there with that win.” Ward laughed.
West Coast Warriors will face ECU Souwest Jets at 6.30pm on Friday at Eaton Recreation Centre.
East Freo Sharks will take on Southside Demons at the Gold Netball Centre at 8.30pm.
