West Coast Warriors have won yet another round of the Gold Industry Group West Australian Netball League season, winning 71-43 against Peel Lightning on Friday night.
The Warriors started strong with star goal shooter Donnell Wallam scoring five unanswered goals within the first few minutes of the term. As the Warriors defence tightened, Lightning struggled to bring the ball down to goal shooter Katie Swetman. Several poor passes from Lightning resulted in a quarter of high turnovers and Warriors capitalised, closing out the first quarter 20-8.
Lightning’s defence in the goal circle was no match for the long lob passes to goal shooter Wallam, who’s height and accuracy proved to be an invaluable, leading the Warriors to a 19 goal lead at half time, 40-21.
Warriors wing defence Amy Donaldson came onto the court in the third quarter and played a strong half against Peel’s swift wing attack Bridgette Maxted causing numerous turnovers. Warriors pressed on to dominate the quarter once again, taking them up to 62-33 at the end of the term.
By the fourth quarter, it was clear the Warriors had a sure win under their belt. Warriors coach Lorraine Ward took the opportunity to mix up positions for the final quarter, sending Hana Stokes into goal shooter to give Wallam a well-earned break. Donaldson came out firing into the final quarter, impressing the crowd with her speedy intercepts on the wings.
After they failed to secure a win in last week’s close game against East Freo, the Warriors redeemed themselves with a comfortable win over Peel.
Next Friday, the Warriors will face ECU Souwest Jets at 8.30pm (GNC) and Peel Lightning take on last year’s grand finalists Western Roar at 8:30pm at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.
