Name: Izzi Ord Kinnear
Age: 18
Club/Association: Belmont and Perth
Role (& accreditation): National C Badge, Belmont AUDO

Give us a snapshot of what your umpiring achievements so far:

I was awarded my National C badge in 2017 and since then I have received the South East Demons Regional Academy umpire award. I have also been given the opportunity to umpire at FIT trials and match play, State Cup, Gold Industry Group WANL Roar match play and Metro League. I have also been appointed as Belmont’s AUDO for 2020.

Why did you start umpiring?

I started umpiring to gain a better understanding of the game through a different perspective. It also provided an opportunity to be more involved in the community and give back to my Association.

What do you love most about umpiring?

I love how every game and every player is unique, adapting and acclimating to the game is exciting and challenging. I enjoy every challenge associated with umpiring. I also really enjoy helping the junior umpires and seeing them develop their skills and love of umpiring.

How has being an umpire benefitted you?

It has made me a more experienced player and given me the chance to meet a variety of new people and connections. Collaborating with different umpires and the teamwork involved has improved my people skills and allowed me to create lasting friendships across associations.

What piece of umpiring advice would you like to pass onto beginner umpires?

Trust your instincts and don’t doubt what you see, trust your gut. I would also recommend seeking and applying coaching feedback to improve your umpiring skills. Get involved in your umpiring community to reap the most benefits from your umpiring experience.
