When reflecting on last year, Semler said she had a great experience, full of fun and learning.
“It was fun playing with all the girls and getting to know them better, also playing against girls from other States was a really good experience,” she said.
“It was a really good experience to verse people better than me,
“To learn how to better myself when it was really tough versing them.”
Semlers goal for herself and her team is to improve on their performance from last year and beat some rivals.
“We’ve been focusing on the attacking side more but also just practising everything, getting our basics right,” she said
“Going up against Tasmania will be really good,
“We did a scratch match against them last year and won and then they won in the tournament.”
The opening and closing ceremony of last year’s tournament was a highlight for Semler.
“To see traditional and modern dances mixed with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dances was really fun, we all got involved,
“The opening ceremony was beautiful. We all got to do a smoking ceremony and be blessed walking through it. A highlight of the tournament to be honest.”
Being able to play the sport she loves around other First Nations girls on a national level is really important to Semler.
“For everyone to see the talent that we have and for us to grow as a community, especially as a Torres Strait Islander is really good,
“Being able to represent my people is really really important to me.”
The Team will kick start their tournament with a match against the reigning premiers, Queensland, on Wednesday, 20 August 7am WST. Find fixtures here.
