ECU Souwest Jets claimed a 55-43 victory in Indigenous Round of the Gold Industry Group West Australian Netball League against Rangers on Sunday afternoon.

With a strong start from Jets, it was seamless teamwork that quickly saw them score the first goal of the afternoon. Although the Jets turned the ball over, the quick deflection by Ranger’s Centre led to Rangers’ first goal.

Jets turned up the pressure, forcing Rangers to pass backwards. Jets’ WD Riley Culnane  used the court space and was often found unmanned and an easy pass for her team. The first quarter finished with only a small margin between the teams.

Rangers came into the second quarter strong, putting two goals straight in. However, this wasn’t going to stop the Jets as they turned the same energy on as the first quarter, putting another goal in with the help of every player on their team.

Jets defended ball-side when the Rangers came up at the beginning of third quarter. Although the pressure was there, Rangers’ GS Katie Swetman did not shy from working towards more goals. It was Jets’ swift leads, passes and goals that saw the third quarter wrap up with them holding a 17-point lead.

Rangers came into the fourth quarter determined, passing in and out of the goal circle tactfully, tightening the margin and putting pressure on Jets to maintain their lead. With just 30 seconds on the clock, Jets put their final goal in for the afternoon, securing their win.

ECU Souwest Jets coach Karly Guadagnin was delighted with another victory.

“It’s a new group, a young group, so we are finding out and working for each other’s strengths and trying to nut out what is our best combination at various times depending on how we’re travelling and how the opposition is,” she said.

“It was good to put a couple of different combinations out there, so we were pleased the girls stuck to the game-plan and were able to fight off a comeback from the opposition because we were out by a decent amount, then they fought back, so we showed our resilience to keep pushing on and come out with a win.”
