Netball WA brought together some of its most influential stakeholders last week to discuss the role of sport in creating female leaders and role models in WA’s communities.
The special event was held at Government House and co-hosted by Netball WA’s Patron, the Honourable Kim Beazley AC, Governor of Western Australia along with the Patron of Shooting Stars, the Honourable Julie Bishop.
Netball WA CEO Simon Taylor said it was a great privilege of the sport to have amazing ambassadors, and to have their support in facilitating such an important conversation.
“Western Australia has a long history of Netball in this state and provides opportunities for women and girls to grow and develop, teaching leadership, teamwork, resilience and empowerment.
“This was another opportunity to bring together some of our most committed and passionate supporters and collectively challenge our roles in creating meaningful and genuine opportunities to better empower women in the communities we engage with and promote the success and contributions they make.
Mr Taylor said netball, as the number one female sport in the country, had a responsibility that comes with representing more girls and women than almost any other organisation.
“We take the responsibility that comes with that influence, very seriously, and are driven as an organisation to make a significant impact beyond the netball court.
“We know that, through the work we deliver across our Shooting Stars program; when we invest in empowering women, we create stronger communities.
“We also know that when our West Coast Fever athletes step out onto the court, or into a school, they embody empowerment and are role models for young girls to aspire to.
“We are incredibly proud of the support our sport enjoys, and of the contribution and commitment these individuals have made to our organisations over the years,” Mr Taylor said.
With support from the Gold Industry Group, Netball WA is providing exceptional educational pathways for women, by establishing a scholarship to assist registered netballers with an interest in a career in the mining industry, to commence and pursue an undergraduate qualification at the University of Western Australia. Applications close on October 31.
Netball WA will continue to support and promote women in leadership roles through the sport. Netball WA’s new initiative, Parliamentary Friends of Netball, also seeks to create closer connections between the netball community in Western Australia and our state’s parliamentary representatives, to further and strengthen relations in support of Netball WA’s purpose to advance the sport and ultimately advance communities.
