As part of NAIDOC week celebrations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander netball players from across WA are invited to participate in the annual NAIDOC Netball Carnival, the largest such netball event in Australia. Held at the Gold Netball Centre, and staged in conjunction with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, the NAIDOC Netball Carnival is both an opportunity to introduce Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander netballers to competitive netball, as well as a platform to increase awareness and education around health promotion, health prevention and care benefits for Indigenous people. The age divisions include Suncorp NetSetGO, 12U, 14U, 16U, 18U, four open divisions, and a Masters division.
The NAIDOC Netball Carnival was first held in 2004 with 20 teams and has grown significantly in the time since. Now in its 15th year, the NAIDOC Netball Carnival includes over 110 teams each year. Netball WA thanks its major partner Healthway – promoting the Fuel to Go & Play health message to encourage young people to eat healthy; the Insurance Commission of WA – promoting the Belt Up campaign to wear seatbelts and be safe on our roads; and the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries.
