Netball and ‘easy on the knees’ are two phrases that you rarely hear in the same sentence. Known for being a fast-paced, high impact sport, this can sometimes be a deterrent for those interested in starting Netball. To remedy this, in October last year, Netball Western Australia officially launched its walking netball program. Walking Netball is as the name suggests; netball but at a walking pace. This modified version of netball reduces the risk of injury while promoting a safe and fun environment to exercise and socialise. Walking Netball is a great alternative for those who feel they cannot play the traditional Netball format anymore, whether this be because of injury, age or inexperience.

Walking Netball provides benefits such as improved motor control, an increase in strength and balance as well as improvements to an overall sense of wellbeing. Some rule modifications which facilitate these benefits include:

  • No running or jumping
  • Players can take up to two steps while holding the ball
  • Rolling substitutions are allowed throughout the game

Walking Netball games range from 30 to 45 minutes, which is shorter than the usual Netball game. For those interested in participating, a pair of comfortable sneakers is highly recommended.

The Walking Netball Program was made possible thanks to the Innovation Challenge Program grant from the State Government, which rewards new and clever ideas, including those that respond to community needs.

With five great locations to play around Perth, it is easier than ever to get involved.
