A tall, strong and agile goalkeeper, Cheryl made her Australian debut as a 19-year-old at the third World Championships in Jamaica in 1971, taking on tall goal shooters from teams including England, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica.
Her ability to time her jump and intercept shots became a hallmark of her game.
Cheryl earned all her Australian caps at World Championships, the only opportunities for international competition available during her playing career.
She also played a major role in Western Australia’s national championship wins in 1969, 1970 and 1971. After a severe ankle injury sidelined her, she fought her way back to the top level, helping Australia win gold in Auckland in 1975.
Cheryl is one of only two WA-developed players to have been part of two outright Australian World Championship-winning teams in the 20th century, claiming titles in 1971 and 1975.
The defender and passionate netball advocate was inducted into the WAIS Hall of Champions in 2018 and the Netball WA Court of Champions in 2022.
Netball WA congratulates Cheryl on this well-earned recognition of her contribution to the sport.
