A special Belt Up netball featuring Aboriginal artwork by Peyton Eades will feature at the 2021 NAIDOC Netball Carnival.
Peyton, who participated at last year’s Carnival, entered the competition to design this year’s ball and was selected as the overall winner, seeing her design brought to life on the 2021 Belt Up NAIDOC netball.
Peyton said that she felt lucky to be chosen as the winner of the competition.
“I hope the netball community like my design,” she said.
“The inspiration came from a special member in my family. I chose red to represent the Earth, yellow to represent the sun and black to represent the Indigenous people of Australia.
“I have chosen to integrate dot painting as it is a traditional Aboriginal art technique. The blue, green and white represent the family member who inspired me. I chose to put a snake on one side to represent the rainbow serpent, which is an Aboriginal Dreamtime story.
“Lastly, I added a swan on one side as it is the native bird for Western Australia.”
Peyton’s ball will be used by more than 1000 participants at this year’s NAIDOC Netball Carnival, which commences at 8.30am on Sunday, November 7.
The Carnival is proudly supported by Principal Partner, the Gold Industry Group, and Major Partners Healthway promoting the Fuel to Go and Play message, the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, and the Insurance Commission of Western Australia promoting the Belt Up message.
Commission Secretary Kane Blackman said the Insurance Commission was pleased to continue its partnership with Netball WA and deliver another fantastic Belt Up NAIDOC ball.
“This initiative provides an opportunity to engage with Indigenous communities all over WA and put the Belt Up message directly in their hands,” Mr Blackman said.
“We look forward to seeing these netballs in use at the NAIDOC Carnival and in the communities they will be taken back to. Congratulations to Peyton on her winning design!”
