Netball WA and the Gold Industry Group continue to join forces on providing educational pathways for women, with the launch of a unique scholarship to assist student netballers in the pursuit of a career in Australia’s mining industry.

Applications are now open for the ‘Netball WA Sports Excellence Scholarship in Netball’ at the University of Western Australia (UWA), made possible through the support of the Gold Industry Group.

The new scholarship will financially assist and encourage high-performing student athletes in netball, with an interest in a career in the gold industry, to commence and pursue an undergraduate qualification at UWA covering a diverse range of roles in the industry.

Commencing in 2020, the selection process for the annual scholarship will be based on academic achievement and athletic performance, with the best applicant demonstrating a keen pursuit in the gold sector.

Netball WA CEO Simon Taylor welcomed the initiative as another example of the sport’s commitment to creating opportunities for girls and women, and as one of the core objectives of the sport’s landmark partnership with the Gold Industry Group.

“The Netball WA Sports Excellence Scholarship in Netball presents a clear pathway for anyone playing netball in our State and with an interest in mining to pursue further educational opportunities,” said Taylor.

“As part of vision of advancing communities, we are proud to be able to create an opportunity that promotes a pathway for women into education, and ultimately into leadership roles within their respective communities.

“We thank the Gold Industry Group and the University of Western Australia for making this possible.”

Gold Industry Group Vice-Chair Kelly Carter is thrilled to join with Netball WA and UWA in supporting a new pipeline of future leaders in Australia’s gold sector.

“The gold industry offers such a broad range of opportunities across many technical and professional disciplines. We are delighted to support the educational pathway and development of student athletes in their pursuit of a career in gold,” she said.

To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, an applicant must: demonstrate an interest in gold mining and in a career in the gold mining industry; be a registered and active member of a Netball WA affiliate club; be a commencing student1*; qualify for the UWA Student Athlete Development Program as at least a tier three athlete for the sport of netball;2* be enrolled, or eligible to enrol in an undergraduate degree course at the University.

Applications open on 23rd December and can be submitted via the UWA website.
