The Western Roar have held off a fast finishing Hamersley Comets to win the 2024 Gold Industry Group WA Netball League Open Division Grand Final by the narrowest of margins 46-45.

Behind by five goals with four minutes left, the Comets gave everything they had to run down the Roar to level scores with less than a minute to go.

The Roar were then able to score off their centre pass with MVP Sophia Lamers scoring the winning goal with 10 seconds left on the clock.

Q1: Roar 11 | Comets 11

It was the Roar that jumped out of the gates off the back of the shooting combination of Lamers and Emma Putt.

Combined with the defensive pressure from Caitlyn Brown, the Roar were able to control the start of the match.

But the Comets would not let them get too far head and a late charge saw them draw level just before quarter time.

Q2: Roar 24 | Comets 21

The start of the second quarter was all the Western Roar as they scored the first six goals of the quarter to open up the game.

Brown continued her strong form making life hard for the Comets goalers and combined with the work of Cleo Kenny at Wing Defence, the Roar were in control.

The Comets subbed Madeleine for State 17/U representative Halle Richards which had immediate impact. The move allowed Emma Cosh to start connecting the Comets and they worked their way back into the contest.

Q3: Roar 34 | Comets 34

The first five minutes were all Comets as they controlled the contest and put the Roar under pressure to erase the lead and hit the front.

Captain Lindal Rohde, in her final GIG WANL game, lifted at Wing Attack, while young gun Richards was providing the focal point in attack.

A goal for goal battle followed as both teams fought hard to gain a significant lead.

The Comets tried to keep the Roar guessing throughout the quarter as they rotated Cosh, Richard and Ash through the circle.

Q4: Roar 46 | Comets 45

The Roar started the better of the teams with the game on the line and built a five-goal lead as Asha Parsons at Goal Attack partnering Lamers in the circle to help the Roar create their buffer.

But the Comets wouldn’t go away as Scarlett Jauncey and Liz Dronfield won ball in defence, while Cosh was red hot from long range and young Richards composed under the post.
