Western Roar claimed their fourth win of the season in a 52-39 victory on Friday night against ECU Souwest Jets in a rescheduled Round 1 of the Gold Industry Group West Australian Netball League.
There were three parties to this game; Roar, Jets and turnovers.
Jets hit the scoreboard early and managed to create a lead against Roar by working hard to keep the ball in play and ensuring they always had hands to the ball.
However, the margin wasn’t to be for Jets as both teams went goal for goal with five minutes left on the clock. If it wasn't Sophia Lamers it was Maddison Schultz. Roar hunted their prey to escape with a two goal advantage heading into the second quarter.
In the second quarter Jets brought ideas of play to the court but failed in the execution. Plenty of turn overs from both teams and Roar found a way to favour their side with the ball; through intercepts. Roar also doubled up defensively on Jets’ shooters in the circle which saw their lead go from two goals to five.
Commencement of the second half had Jets and Roar going back and forth, fighting for the ball and Jets aiming to tighten the margin once more whilst Roar made efforts to increase it.
Jets’ combination of Gibson and Giselle Taylor put on a performance, but it was going to take more than that to break their opponents as Roar found themselves under pressure but still in control.
Jets didn’t give up nor lose integrity as they continued to fight for intercept challenges but came off second best. Roar paced themselves, slowing down to welcome the right chance before passing. The third quarter ended with Roar taking a seven goal lead into the next quarter.
Roar turned up the pressure in the final quarter which saw Jets playing Roar’s game and chasing after them. However, it was a quarter of contact calls for Jets as they attempted to make a comeback to stay in the game. The final whistle blew in favour to Roar as they created the biggest margin of the game, 13 goals, making it the difference for the win.
Western Roar will face Southside Demons in Round 9.
