Peel Lightning landed their first Gold Industry Group Western Australian Netball League victory on Friday night in a tightly fought five goal win over Southside Demons.
The 49 to 44 goal win saw Lighting come out firing in the first quarter to match the Demons fierce start with Lightning Goal shooter Katie Swetman scoring 11 goals to lead the team two goals heading into the first break.
Demons clawed their way back in the first minutes of the second quarter to even the score, their dominance in attack resulted with a three goal lead at half time.
Lightning’s pocket rocket Nakita Little stepped into the goal keeper role for the second half in a bid to slow down the Demons’ attacking edge, but their defence was no match for Meg Gallager who put the Demons nine goals up at the end of the third quarter.
In what seemed like a sure win for the Demons, the fourth quarter brought a new challenge with Lightning’s Swetman back in the goal shooter bib. Peel found their feet in defence to fend off the Demons and Little’s quick intercepts gave her shooters an opportunity in attack.
It was goal for goal in the last four mins of the game, as both teams sensed the pressure of an approaching siren. But Lightnings’ strong attack did not disappoint, after Swetman and goal attack Kate Duncan worked together to turn the game around which left Lightning with a late four goal break. Swetman sweetened the wine with a goal at the edge of the circle in the last three seconds of the game.
