Northern Star Resources took out the premier honours defeating AngloGold Ashanti Australia in a grand final showdown at the Gold Industry Group (GIG) Corporate Netball Challenge on Friday.

Hosted by Netball WA, the annual Challenge pits GIG members against each other in a series of matches to crown the best gold industry corporate netball team of the day.

14 GIG teams from Gold Fields, Northern Star Resources, Saracen Mineral Holdings, Newmont Corporation, Ramelius Resources, AngloGold Ashanti Australia, St Barbara Limited and The Perth Mint put their competitive spirit on show at the world-class Gold Netball Centre.

The Northern Stars claimed back-to-back titles after a nail-biting one-goal win over AngloGold’s Lions.

Remarkably the Lions hadn’t dropped a game all day and had a two-goal lead over the reigning champions, but after the halftime break the momentum swung towards the Northern Stars.

Now in its second year, Gold Industry Group Vice Chairperson, Kelly Carter said the event continues to be a terrific way to celebrate the industry’s long-term partnership with netball in Western Australia.

“The day was a great celebration of our partnership. The fantastic turnout from our members is a reflection of the level of member support for our partnership, and the strength of our relationship with netball in Western Australia. I’m very proud of what we are achieving together,” said Carter.

The teams then joined Netball WA, West Coast Fever and Shooting Stars in a sundowner to celebrate the day and reflect on the second year in partnership.

Netball WA Chief Commercial Officer Dan Barker said it was great to see so many teams taking part in the event in support of netball in Western Australia.

“This is a fantastic event that allows Netball WA the opportunity to engage with the gold industry community more closely and continue to build on our already strong relationships,” Barker said.

“The Gold Industry Group continues to invest in netball in our State, both at a grassroots and elite level and we are incredibly proud to have them as our partner.”

The Gold Industry Group is proudly supports netball in Western Australia, as the Principal Partner of Netball WA and West Coast Fever, and Premier Partner of Shooting Stars; thanks to members Gold Fields, Northern Star Resources, Saracen Mineral Holdings, Newcrest Mining, Gold Road Resources, St Barbara Limited, Newmont Goldcorp Australia, AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ramelius Resources and The Perth Mint.
