Former West Coast Fever athlete and First Nations State Team coach Josie Janz-Dawson joins the program in a coaching role for the first time as 19/U Head Coach. Janz-Dawson brings a wealth of on-court experience at the elite level, combined with a growing presence in the coaching space.
Also appointed is Melanie Rainey, who steps into the role of Head Coach for the 17/U team. Rainey has been a valued member of the program over the past two seasons in assistant coach roles for both the 17/U and 19/U sides. Her progression into the Head Coach position is a testament to her commitment to athlete development and coaching excellence.
Both Janz-Dawson and Rainey have progressed through the Netball WA coaching pathway and are actively involved in developing emerging talent through the Gold Industry Group West Australian Netball League.
For Janz-Dawson, she is most excited to work with this group of athletes who have a strong individual desire to be the best athlete and ultimately perform as a team.
“Having come through the netball pathway system as a junior athlete attending these State Nationals and progressing through the elite pathway, I have a good perspective of what Nationals are all about and what to expect,” she said.
“I have been on my own personal development and coaching journey and I feel having played at a higher level I have a good awareness of the athletes, their skill set and learning styles.”
Rainey said she looks forward to supporting the athlete’s development both on and off the court.
“I’m feeling incredibly honoured to be named the 17s State Coach for the first time,” she said.
“Having been involved in the program previously as assistant coach, it’s exciting to now lead the Team and continue developing young talent coming through the pathway.”
Netball WA General Manager – Performance and Pathway Sara Francis Bayman said it is inspiring to see WA coaches progressing through the pathway and leading the next generation of athletes.
“Congratulations to Josie and Mel on their appointments as State Team coaches. Their dedication and impact across the GIG WANL and State programs have been outstanding,” she said.
“The 2026 West Coast Fever Futures Program aims to continue building the next generation of elite netballers, supported by experienced and passionate coaches from within the Netball WA community.
Janz-Dawson and Rainey will lead the State Teams at the Netball National Championships in 2026.
