Western Australia’s regional netball stars were on display over the past week in both the North West Regional Championships in Broome and the Wheatbelt-Goldfields Regional Championships presented by CBH Group, hosted in Merredin.

In Merredin, 32 teams from across the Wheatbelt and Goldfields came together for two days of exciting netball across five divisions.

It was the competition’s fourth year running after beginning in 2019 and has been held every year since 2021 with this year being the first being presented by CBH Group.

Mana Netball Club were able to overcome Merredin Netball Association in the Grand Final of the Open Division. While it was Sonix Netball Club who prevailed in the 18/U and 14/U Girls Division.

Mixed divisions were also part of the competition in the 12/U Division where Imperials won in a strong display against Northam in finals.

Up north, teams from eight towns from across the region descended on Broome to battle it out, with more than 300 players and coaches involved in the competition across six divisions. Broome Netball Association President Christie Milckovic calculated that teams had travelled more than 12,500 km to attend the championships.

In attendance were Karratha, Paraburdoo, Derby, Newman, Port Hedland and Tom Price, all joining the hosts, Broome in what’s been the longest running Regional Championships in the State.

It was Karratha who took home most of the spoils, winning five of the six divisions. Port Hedland were the only other winner as they overcame a tough challenge from Broome in the Open Division 2.

In the junior divisions, Karratha couldn’t be matched, beating Broome in each of the Grand Finals from 12/U to 16/U.

Netball WA General Manager – Community Netball Beth Harvey said the Regional Championships are an important way to recognise and promote netballing talent from a playing, coaching and umpiring perspective.

“The Regional Championships are a great way for our regional communities to come together and show off the amazing depth of talent we have in WA,” she said.

“Whether it’s in the North West or the Wheatbelt, the unwavering support from players, parents, coaches and officials has been really heartening to see across the State.

“These events are so important for giving players, coaches and umpires crucial experience at a competitive level and really help with development and scouting future talent.

“These competitions would not be possible without the generous support from our partners. In particular, the CBH Group who help us present the Wheatbelt-Goldfields Regional Championships.”
