More than 600 netballers representing 23 schools will participate in Netball WA’s 2021 Multicultural Carnival on Friday, August 27, to celebrate the rich diversity of the West Australian community.
The one-day tournament invites schools from across WA to participate in celebrating multicultural communities, whilst developing their netball skills in a fun and supportive environment.
The inaugural carnival was held in 2015 at Belmont Netball Association with more than 200 participants across 17 teams. Since then, the Multicultural Carnival has continued to grow, with more than 60 nationalities represented.
This year 67 teams from 23 schools, including two Australian Islamic Colleges, will compete across four Divisions from Year 3 to Year 11. The event will run from 9am to 2.30pm in a round-robin format at Perth Netball Association
Ellenbrook Secondary College will have the largest representation with eight teams, while Wanneroo Secondary College will have six teams attending.
Thanks to Netball WA’s continued partnership with the Insurance Commission of Western Australia, promoting the Belt Up message, the carnival will again feature a bespoke ball, which will also be used at the 2021 NAIDOC Netball Carnival in November.
The Belt Up partnership, which is now in its eighth year, sees the road safety message delivered to more than 240,000 netballers every season throughout Western Australia. As one of the largest sports in the state, netball provides a strong platform to communicate the importance of belting up in the car.
Netball WA General Manager of Community Netball, Liz Booth said the carnival continued to be a highlight on the Netball WA calendar.
“Netball WA is very proud to host this annual event celebrating the diversity of our community and bringing different cultures together to enjoy playing netball in a fun, safe environment,” Booth said.
“Incorporating the NAIDOC ball again this year is a terrific way to not only celebrate our State’s multiculturalism, but also acknowledge our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants.”
