The WA team is heading off to Queensland today to partake in the annual national netball tournament, Marie Little Shield, a competition for women with an intellectual disability.
Introduced in 2013, the event recognises Marie Little OAM’s dedication to improving the lives of people with an intellectual disability through the power of netball.
Now in its 6th year, the competition is set to be fierce with ACT joining the pool.
WA Marie Little Shield Head Coach, Amy Fuller said with more teams to compete against, WA is looking to put a few more wins on the board this year.
“We have four new talented players, including WA’s first regional athlete, adding to eight experienced players who have been a part of the pathway for a couple of years,” said Fuller.
“Our focus leading into the competition this year has been on building some strategy into our game, with set plays for centre passes and backline throw-ins.”
“We have a fantastic looking team, with height at both ends and speed through the middle.”
Netball WA General Manager of Community, Liz Booth, said the Marie Little Shield has become one of Netball WA’s favourite events of the year.
“We are honoured to be involved in a tournament that sets the stage for inclusion and diversity in the sporting environment,” said Booth.
“It’s great to see the progress and development of the players year on year both on and off the court and on behalf of the WA netball community we wish the WA team the best of luck.”
