ECU Souwest Jets recorded an upset win against West Coast Warriors in Round 8 of the Gold Industry Group West Australian Netball League Opens on Sunday, handing the ladder leaders their first loss of the 2021 season.

Souwest Jets got off to a great start in the 51-35 win and lead at every break, pushing the margin out to 18 goals at three-quarter time before Warriors won the fourth quarter to reduce the final margin to 16.

Jets coach Karly Guadagnin was thrilled with the result against the previously undefeated Jets.

“Really proud of the girls today, they did a lot to bounce back from Friday night and we are continually focusing on five-minute blocks and winning those five-minute blocks and getting that consistency,” Guadagnin said.

“We got ourselves in a really good position in the first half which was great.”

“We’ve got a young team and we are really keen to contest that top four position so that’s our plan.”

“Proud of the girls for finding a bit more consistency today and getting that win, fantastic!”

After Jets scored the first goal for the afternoon, Warriors established their place on the court with Marene Peyper putting two goals in the net.

Although the Warriors were fast, Jets’ GS Giselle Taylor was able to work Jets’ score back up, with the help of teammate Ruth Aryang keeping the pressure on defensively.

Heading into the second quarter on top, Jets got the ball straight down their court and had the first goal. Brooke Gibson played as Jets’ GA, mastering the goal circle with her partner GS Giselle Taylor.

Although Jets were in front, Warrior’s GD Caitlyn Brown did not let the ball pass her easily, intercepting multiple passes. With Ella Eastaugh in Centre and WA Cassie Farquhar-Reid for the Jets, their clean passes and speed were instrumental in getting the ball from the centre third down to their shooters, leading to more goals and finishing the first half with a strong 13-point lead for Jets.

Jets were not ready to slow down, starting the third quarter out just as strong. Warriors turned the pressure up with their WA Laura Jenour staying in front of her opposition and making use of the space around her to push leads and create opportunity for her team to pass. With Caitlyn Brown now in GK, Warriors’ possession of the ball was being actively protected.

However, Brooke Gibson playing GA for the Jets would not let the score narrow too quickly, putting another goal in for the afternoon, and with Simone Dalkin finishing the game with a final goal in the last three seconds, Jets walked away with a 16-goal win.
