The first ever Southern NAIDOC Carnival was an impressive display of First Nations netball talent with 16 teams participating from Katanning, Mandurah, Albany and Narrogin.

More than 250 people were involved in the carnival which saw teams participate across Woolworths NetSetGo, 12U, 14U, Open Women’s and Open Mixed divisions at the Katanning Leisure and Function Centre.

The Southern NAIDOC Carnival forms part of the Inclusive Participation Project which is made possible thanks to the support of the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Netball WA’s NAIDOC Presenting Partner Fortescue.

The project focuses on providing opportunities for participation in programs, carnivals and competition for Aboriginal Girls and women, as well as the upskill and support of umpires and coaches.

The carnival was able to recongise and celebrate the contribution that Aboriginal participants make to netball each year in a competitive and fun environment.

Umpires were also able to engage in umpire coaching and mentoring opportunities throughout the day.

Netball WA Participation Manager Kobie Combes said the carnival was a fantastic experience for those involved.

“The carnival being held in the Southern Region allowed talented athletes who otherwise would not be able to make it to a NAIDOC carnival the same opportunity within their local area,” she said.

The Southern NAIDOC Carnival has provided a platform for participation and team engagement in the lead up to Boorloo NAIDOC which will be hosted during NAIDOC Week, on Wednesday 10 July at the Wembley Sports Park in Jolimont.
