Match of the Week: Roar on to Grand Final

Western Roar and Curtin Hammersley Comets went head-to-head on Friday night for the 2022 GIGWANL preliminary finals where Roar earned their spot in the Grand Final next weekend, by defeating Comets 63-49.

Highlights

Western Roar have proven once again to be one of the strongest defensive teams in the league, stopping Comets from effectively executing their attack strategies.

Roar’s shooter Sophia Lamers scored a one in a million goal when she went up for a rebound on GA Maddison Shultz’s shot, tipping the ball back up and into the net.

Quarter One

Comets brought the heat and gained the momentum against their opponents, taking the lead early in the first term.   Roar shook off their nerves and settled into the game, steadily closing in on Comets.

Coming off a slow start, Roar managed to take a one goal leading ahead of the first break.

Quarter Two

An incredibly competitive quarter from both teams, with centre court players working overtime to move the ball between attack and defence.

Roar started to extend their lead through impressive intercepts in their defensive end.

Comets began to catch up and eventually evened the scoreboard to 28 goals apiece at half time break.

Quarter Three

Roar pulled ahead once again following a particularly impressive goal from Sophia Lamers.

There was chaos in the centre court as both teams aggressively tried to gain an advantage over their opponents.  Roar dominated the third quarter scoring 17 goals to Comets’ 9, putting Roar in the lead by 7 goals.

Quarter Four

Patience and accuracy were on Roar’s side in the final term as they remained unflustered by Comets’ defence.  Roar continued to surge ahead, on fresh legs, outpacing Comets through the centre and goal thirds.

Comets fell prey to Roar, who won the match with 13 goals to spare.
