Match of the Week: Roar sharpen their claws

Western Roar took on Peel Lightning in the NAIDOC round of the GIGWANL where Roar were victorious with a final score of 60-34.

This year’s NAIDOC theme is ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’ which is a call to all Australians to move beyond just acknowledgement and instead to amplify our voices to bridge the gap between aspirations and reality.

Quarter One

Coming off the back of a narrow loss on Friday night, Roar started the game full of determination.

Roar are masters of faking their passes and used this tactic to their full advantage against their opponents.

Tight defence in Lightning’s goal circle made it hard for them to score comfortably, thus Roar led by three goals at the end of the first term.

Quarter Two

Both sides struggled with their passes, with many balls slipping through fingers or going to the opposition.

Lightning were hard pressed to find attacking space as Roars defenders zoned them out.

Roar started to find their speed in the final minutes of the first half extending their lead, 24-17.

Quarter Three

Scrappy passes from both sides saw the start of a slow third quarter.

Neither side took control of the game as the ball was thrown from end to end.

Roar maintained their lead 42-33.

Quarter Four

Roar switched up the gears for the final quarter, showing their strength as a top of the ladder team.

Speed and stamina were the deciding factors of the game and although Lightning fought hard, Roar snuck to a 26 goal win.
