Netball WA is trialling the introduction of a Rapid Round into the Gold Industry Group WA Netball League Men’s Division over the next three weeks.

The Men’s Rapid Round will go through Rounds 7, 8 and 9 where each team will play each other once. The Round will feature a number of rule changes designed to increase the speed of play:

  • There will be only five players on the court per team. No Wing Attack or Wing Defence;
  • Each quarter will be reduced from 15 to 10 minutes;
  • An additional semi-circle is marked halfway between the goal post and the existing semi-circle. Goals scored between the inner semi-circle and outer semi-circle will be worth two goals;
  • In the first six minutes of each quarter players can score shots worth one or two points;
  • For the final four minutes both shooters, can shoot from outside the outer circle for three points; and
  • Centre passes will be taken by the team that did not score the last point.

GIG WANL Competition Manager Tracey Swami said she is excited to see how the rounds would shake up the game.

“We are trialling the inclusion of Rapid Round into our existing Men’s GIG WANL season to add an element of change to their competition,” Swami said.

“With four teams in the competition, teams play each other four times throughout the season before finals. We thought what a perfect opportunity to add something different and exciting to the Men’s Division.

“It’s fantastic that we get to trial this with the men as I feel the speed of their game and the strength the guys have on court, works well for the Rapid Round version. Not to mention them all wanting to one up each other on the three-point shot.”

Round 7 Fixture
6:30pm Southside Demons v West Coast Warriors
8:00pm Western Roar v Hamersley Comets
Court 1 - Gold Netball Centre, 200 Selby Street, Jolimont
