Match of the Week: Roar V Warriors

Western Roar have gone above and beyond to beat reigning champions, West Coast Warriors in Sunday afternoon’s Grand Final match.

Coming into the round as the underdogs, Roar focussed and managed to defeat their opponents 57-40 in what was an electrifying, fiercely contested game.

Quarter One

Unfazed by the pressure, Warriors began the match at a sprint, catching Roar’s usually tight defence off guard and allowing them to gain an early lead.

Roar eventually settled into the game, picking up the pace to make their mark on the scoreboard.

Warriors remained consistent down the court giving them a five-goal lead after the first quarter.

Quarter Two

It was an aggressive start to the second term with both teams fighting to assert their dominance.

Roar, having finally settled into their usual rhythm, brought a fierce competition through the centre court narrowing the margin to only two goals.

Warriors struggled to find avenues to attack with Roar tightening their defence.

Roar managed to reel in their opponents with both sides at 24 goals apiece at the halftime break in front of an excited crowd.

Quarter Three

Roar began to pull ahead of their rivals, as Warriors encountered setback after setback.

Roar ran away with the momentum and became unstoppable in the third quarter, rattling their opponents with the sudden change of pace and determination.

Warriors’ shooter Maddison O’Regan was taken off the court following a collision and took no further part in the game.

Roar took a decisive 11 goal lead ahead of the final term.

Quarter Four

Both teams showed their desperation in the final term, running hard for every ball.

Warriors managed to take advantage of a small number of Roar’s turnovers but were overwhelmed by their opponents. Roar went on to claim a 17-goal victory.

Roar coach Dylan McPherson was extremely pleased by his team’s performance, especially in the second half of the match.

“The team was fantastic. I thought we dominated the third quarter despite being hesitant at the start,” McPherson said.

“We knew that Warriors were going to come out strong, but we just had to keep being aggressive and keep attacking.”

Roar captain and goal attack Maddison Schultz was voted MVP, winning the medal with a perfect score from match officials.

“I thought the girls went out with full confidence the whole game and really backed each other with everything,” Schultz said.
