Netball WA has selected a strong group of athletes, coaches and staff to represent Western Australia at the inaugural First Nations Cup to be held in Melbourne in September.

The 23/U team features players with GIG WA Netball League and representative experience, with Netball Australia allowing one player to be outside of this age group.

Coach Josie Janz-Dawson said WA had selected a strong team to compete at the First Nations Cup and she knows the team will have immense support from across the community.

“We cannot underestimate the positive flow on effect this initiative can have in building pride and confidence in young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women,” Janz-Dawson said.

“We are grateful that through this initiative, we gain direct access to experience, knowledge and support in the high-performance system from Netball WA and West Coast Fever.

“We had a quick turnaround to organise and select this team and we have selected 10 players from within the GIG WANL Opens, 21s and Academy players, current and former WA representatives and Australian squad representatives, who fit into the under 23 age bracket. Netball Australia has also allowed for one player on approval to be outside of this age group and participate in the tournament.

“Next year the selection process will evolve be somewhat different with the earlier commencement of the program.”

Janz-Dawson said she expected the team and the program to develop in time, which will raise the capability and performance of the group.

“We have some great talent in this State and hopefully from here we can work with the broader GIG WANL clubs, regions and associations to identify talent and retain our athletes in the netball pathway system.”
