Curtin Hamersley Comets secured their fifth win of the season with a 54-34 victory over Southside Demon in Round 12 of Gold Industry Group West Australian Netball league, on Friday night.
Missing last week’s game, the Comets successfully secured fourth place on the ladder, but coach Alexis Stevens believed there was room for improvement.
“We were pleased to get the win by the margin as much as we did, (but) we were a bit scrappy,” she said.
Heading to the end of the first two quarters, the Demons were trailing behind with a score of 17-31, as Comets took the lead.
Comets’ mid-courter Lindal Rhode bolted through the court as she utilised her agile movements to intercept the ball and powerful lob throws to get the ball to her teammates inside the goal circle.
After half-time it was still anyone’s game as Demons upped their defence tactics to keep the ball away from the Comets, resulting in both teams scoring ten goals each in the third quarter, 27-41.
Coach Stevens mentioned Demons’ coach Josie Janz-Dawson had her team strategically positioned which made it difficult.
“Josie has got them playing that great box zone style defence and at times we really struggled to get through it,” she said.
She said she was pleased the team maintained consistency and didn’t lose in the third quarter.
With a fighting spirit, Demons’ captain and mid-courter Teagan Phillips found herself tugging on the ball against the Comets a couple of times throughout the rounds.
Phillips said the team wanted to come out hard defensively, but struggled to keep up with intercepting the ball.
“I think we fought hard and tried our best but (we’re) just not converting enough, our turnovers let us down tonight,” she said.
Leading her team to victory, Comets’ captain and goal shooter Sarah East, scored the last goal of Round 12; totalling her score to 38 of Comets’ 54 goals.
Curtin Hamersley Comets will face Rangers at 6.15pm on Friday at Gold Netball Centre, while Southside Demons will take on ECU Souwest Jets at 8.30pm.
