The Bunbury Moorditj Yorgas Netball Club and Kwinana Djarlyn Netball Club are the lucky recipients of a $2,500 grant each, thanks to the continued support of Community TAB.
Late last year, Community TAB invited Netball WA’s Aboriginal Grassroots Sites from regional locations across Western Australia to share how their club successfully supports local Aboriginal families and community to achieve positive outcomes through netball.
Bunbury Moorditj Yorgas Netball Club Committee Members, Joanne Hill and Charmaine Thorne, explained they want to be a foundation where indigenous girls can develop amongst a cohort of good role models, leaders, advocates and inspiration.
“We have adopted a name that identifies who we are and what we are about. Bunbury Moorditj Yorgas (Strong Women) is incumbent of how we go about our program and what we aim to achieve,” said Hill.
“We are delighted to be a recipient of the Community TAB grant! The funds will help support our participants and volunteers to achieve desired outcomes throughout our 2020 program such as, training and development for our coaches and volunteers, increased accessibility to grassroots netball, improvements in social and health outcomes and provide guidance and advocacy for participants to become involved in pathway programs and a range of competitions held across the state.”
Kwinana Djarlyn Netball Club Site Coordinators, Tanya Halliday and Paul Garlett expressed their gratitude for being selected as a winner.
“This funding will enable us to purchase our first set of uniforms, strengthening our participants sense of identity and belonging. Each time they now step out onto the court they will do so proudly representing Kwinana Djarlyn,” said Halliday.
General Manager Community TAB Matthew Thomas said both grassroots sites showed they have been doing incredible work in their communities and for their participants.
“The Bunbury and Kwinana sites exemplify the importance of sport in the community and the positive pathways that their clubs are creating for young women,” said Thomas.
“We are excited to recognise these sites and to shine a light on them as an example to all sporting clubs.”
The Netball WA Grassroots Sites program aims to provide opportunities to increase netball participation and development for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living through WA.
The program currently operates in seven regional areas, with over 300 athletes and a large number of coaches and officials engaging in and progressing through the Netball WA pathway.
Netball WA thanks Community TAB for providing our Aboriginal Grassroots Sites with the opportunity for added support towards advancing netball participation and development.
