In a thrilling Preliminary Final night, the Comets have survived a final quarter fight back by the Southside Demons to qualify for the Grand Final by three goals.

This will be the Comets third straight Grand Final appearance, all of which have been against the Western Roar and under the leadership of Head Coach Michelle Cox.

Comets 52 defeat Southside Demons 49

The importance of the match was understood from the first centre pass. Both sides defensive pressure, produced by Comets Mia Henderson, Liz Dronfield and Kianah Davey and Demons Chanel Gomes and Abbey Hanley were enough to keep the teams close.

During the second term, the Comets were able to run away with a lead as high as 11 goals. Captain Georgia Morgan remains an unsung hero of the side, her calm presence and decisive decision-making integral in the mid-court.

Comet Jasmah Haywood was outstanding in goals, with 26 in the first half alone and 40 in total for the match. Sloan Burton scored 12 of her own, whilst also notching multiple deflections and turnovers.

The third quarter continued much of the same, whilst Demon Hayley Evans injected her unique defensive presence, strong in the air against the opponent.

In the final term, it almost looked the unbelievable could occur with the Demons on the fight back, winning the quarter by seven goals. In the final ten minutes alone, Georgia Ettridge scored six and Meg Gallager scored four. With eight minutes remaining and eight goals in it, the crowd were erupting.

Ultimately it was the groundwork the Comets had put in during the first three quarters that solidified their win, and they will advance to the Grand Final against the Western Roar.
