The second week of the GIG WANL season showcased just how talented the Open Division is, with multiple close games across the weekend. Missed out on the matches this weekend? Here’s exactly what you need to know to catch up.

Warriors 42 defeated by Roar 49
Friday night set the tone for what would be an exciting weekend of netball as Roar took home the points with a seven-goal win over Warriors.

The game called for grit and determination, which both teams demonstrated during some fiery battles in the midcourt. The Warriors went into quarter time leading by one goal, only for the Roar to take the second quarter by three goals. Roar kept the tight lead throughout the remainder of the game, with shooting duo Sophia Lamers and Emma Putt taking home 22 and 23 goals respectively.

Warrior Jamaica Jauncey again impressed with 29 goals and for a team that finished 2023 in sixth place, a tight game against the grand finalists showcases their pre-season work.

Lightning 56 defeated by Sharks 59
In a second close game for the Sharks, they have proven the fight they’ve got this year, pulling out another impressive tight win. Both teams scored evenly during the first and fourth quarters, with the Sharks taking a four-goal lead in the second quarter.

Lightning’s Kasey Ridout had a standout performance with a fantastic 39 goals, fighting hard to keep that margin close. Sophie Eastaugh and Georgie Cleaver are shaping up to be a dynamic duo this season for the Sharks, with Eastaugh taking home 31 goals and Cleaver 28. The Sharks are proving to not only be talented this year, but also entertaining, as they fight for those close wins.

Jets 31 defeated by Comets 52
The reigning premiers have once again dominated in their start to the 2024 season, with a 21-goal win over the Jets.

Leading at every change throughout the game, the Comets Aitaua Enari’s 31 goals helped keep the team’s dominant lead. The Jets Biana Grickage, Brooke Gibson and Rylee Hall fought hard for their combined 31 goals, but it just wasn’t enough to keep up with the Comets.

For the Jets, who finished bottom of the ladder in 2023, starting this season playing tough teams is a difficult way to begin a year full of fresh starts. Hopefully their evident hard work will begin to translate into wins on the board.

Rangers 48 defeated by Demons 57
The Demons came to win in the Rangers home game at Mundaring, taking home a nine-goal victory. In a bizarre coincidence, the Demons won by the same margin the last time the teams faced each other in Round 10 last year.

Rangers fought hard in front of their home crowd, starting the game strongly with a four-goal lead in the first quarter. The Demons just proved too strong for the Rangers on the day, winning the next three close quarters to take the win.

Rangers Goaler Abbey Hicks and Demon Meg Gallager have proven to be consistent forces within their teams, both scoring over 30 goals for a second week in a row, a fantastic way to end another great weekend of netball.
