This homecoming is a little more significant for Australian Diamonds captain, Caitlin Bassett.
The former Perth Orioles, West Coast Fever and now Giants shooter, will take to the court for her 100th match for the Diamonds at RAC Arena on Sunday.
Bassett grew up in Perth, representing WA from 2005-2016, and said the opportunity to reach the milestone in front of a home crowd is special.
“I’ve still got a couple of days of training to get through but the potential to play my 100th game in Perth is very fitting,” said Bassett.
“It’s where I started my netball journey. I was really lucky at a young age to get court time with the Perth Orioles and after that the West Coast Fever and that really set me off on the path to my Australian journey.
“To tick off 100 games would be an important milestone, but at the end of the day I just want to hold the Constellation Cup trophy.”
More than 13,000 eager fans are expected to fill RAC Arena for the series decider – showcasing WA to the world.
“For Western Australia, it’s a great way to promote our state,” said the Hon. Paul Papalia, Minister for Tourism.
“Right around the world, people can watch on television and watch online. We’ll be promoting Western Australia and encouraging people to come and visit later on as a result of being able to watch the best Netball right here in Perth.”
The Hon. Mick Murray, Minister for Sport and Recreation, said the positive influence the visiting Diamonds and Ferns will have on young women in the WA community was significant.
“It’s a watershed moment in Western Australia for Women’s sport,” said Murray.
“The work that both teams are doing out in the community, encouraging young women into the sport, is fantastic.”
