The Multicultural Carnival serves as a special day for many schools in the Netball WA community, but for AIC Kewdale, the day is so beloved it has brought them back for a decade.
Coach Nuria Ushoroff, who is also a PE teacher at the school, said her students once again had a fantastic day.
“They said this is the best day ever! They really enjoyed it,” Ms Ushoroff said.
This year, the school put forward three teams and for the first time that included a mixed team.
“I wanted to show the boys that netball is not just for girls, it’s for everyone,” she said,
“Once they had gotten the hang of it, they had so much fun,
“These kids aren’t netball kids, for many of them it was their first time playing netball and despite some nerves they loved it.”
The schools’ year ¾ team came out on top in the Mixed year ¾ Red division after a day of wins and a nail-biting grand final.
“They started off strong, there was four other teams in the division including another from our school which helped get rid of some nerves,” Ms Ushoroff said.
“You could see all of the practice paying off, they were adjusting to the netball rules and umpiring,
“They won five games in a row and then lost the premiership game by one-goal, it was an intense game,
“But we won on percentage!”
After an intense final game, Ms Ushoroff said they weren’t sure if the team had secured their first ever premiership or not, so they made sure to attend the closing ceremony.
“They were so excited when they heard their name, even the parents got involved and were congratulating and saying it was fantastic,” she said.
For AIC Kewdale, Soccer is the sport of choice for most kids, but their coach said winning this premiership cemented the good work they had been doing in PE classes to teach the love of netball
“It’s one of the biggest events on our PE calendar,” she said.
The Multicultural Carnival encourages schools with a diverse and multicultural student base to come along and compete against similar schools in a safe, fun and competitive environment.
“We love it because we are celebrating the diverse range of cultures we have in our school and going to this comp and meeting other diverse students, coming together and playing netball,” Ms Ushoroff said
“It's a real special day, something we do every year. We always come back because it's just so inclusive.”
