Netball WA congratulates West Australian player Sunday Aryang on being selected in the 2021 Australia 21 and Under Squad.

Aryang was the only West Australian selected in the 22-athlete squad after Australia’s most promising young netball talent came together last week for state-based training camps.

With selection now made, Netball Australia plans to bring the selected squad together for a training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra in February.

19-year-old Aryang has progressed through the Netball WA player pathway, having played for East Freo Sharks in the WANL. She has been a training partner with Fever for the past two years and was added to the extended Fever squad this year where she became an important part of Fever’s defensive line.

Aryang played 14 games this season including her first finals series and is quickly being touted as a player to watch in 2021.

In Fever’s semi final against NSW Swifts, Aryang claimed the most valuable player award for that game.

Aryang is one of six athletes from the squad currently signed to 2021 Suncorp Super Netball squad listings.

With selection now made, Netball Australia plans to bring the selected squad together for a training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra in February

After a year of setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Head Coach Kylee Byrne is excited to work with this group.

“I am incredibly grateful we are able to begin preparing for the Netball World Youth Cup again after the COVID-19 pandemic put it on hold this year,” Byrne said.

“Over the next 10 months, myself and the selection panel will be monitoring athlete performances in building towards the Netball World Youth Cup, at camps and various competitions set to take place in 2021.

“I see so much potential with this group of athletes and I can’t wait to spend the next year working closely with them in the hope of bringing back the Netball World Youth Cup to Australia.”

The selection panel is made up of Kylee Byrne, Michelle Wilkins (Netball Centre of Excellence Head Coach) and proxy Australian 21 and Under Selector Carol Cathcart, with the permanent appointment of the third selector to be confirmed in January 2021.

Further athlete selection will take place in the months leading up to the 2021 Netball World Youth Cup set to take place in Fiji from 1-19 December.
