Netball WA have announced the recipients for the Fay Bevan and Bette Allison Scholarships for 2023, recognising emerging and outstanding talent in both coaching and umpiring.

Three umpires and six coaches have been selected from across the state by a selection panel to provide assistance and support for those improving the Netball community.

The Fay Bevan Scholarship is dedicated for umpires who are aspiring to develop their craft and is named after legendary Western Australian umpire Fay Bevan who officiated at multiple World Netball Tournaments in the 70s.

Fay dedicated countless hours of her time nurturing and developing umpires in her home state and was awarded with a Netball WA Life Membership in 1970 and the Australian Sports Medal in 2000.

The Bette Allison Scholarship is named after the former WA State Open and all-Australian team coach and provides opportunities to those who are looking to develop their coaching skill set.

Bette played an instrumental role in establishing WA Junior and Sub-Junior Netball Associations and her passion for teaching took her to the likes of Fiji, Tonga and Montreal where she simultaneously worked as a lecturer and fostered the game of netball.

Jessica Suttar – Esperance Netball Association

Jessica would like to use the scholarship to gain more experience as an umpire and participate in as many competitions as possible. Jessica aspires to umpire at a high level and one day share her knowledge and experience with developing umpires.

Catherine Thornton

Catherine Thornton – Narrogin & Districts Netball Association

Catherine is aiming to achieve the B Badge Accreditation in 2023. She received the 2022 Narrogin & Districts Umpire Award and would like to continue developing within the Great Southern Regional Academy and grab every opportunity she can to improve.

Kasey’s long-term goal is to umpire at the highest level within her region and then the state.
