As Netball WA celebrates its 95th anniversary, it would like to formally congratulate its two newest Life Members, Jill Powell and Shaunne Higgs.
Both women were announced as recipients of the governing body’s highest individual honour at today’s Annual General Meeting.
Powell had a distinguished sporting career, having been a triple international representing England in netball, cricket and athletics.
Since relocating from the UK, Powell has worked and volunteered for Netball WA for almost 20 years, including managing the Netball Development Unit, and has assisted many Associations, including Netball WA, in the development of their Constitutions, Strategic Plans and facility feasibility studies.
Powell led the review of the now West Australian Netball League (WANL) in 2005, and has served on the Netball WA Board since 2015, the Netball WA Governance and Risk Committee since 2017 and was on the Netball WA Governance and Membership Review Working Group from 2016-2018.
Additionally, Powell was a member of the Coastal Netball Region’s Board since 2010, acting as Vice President from 2012-2015, and President from 2015 until its winding up in 2018.
Shaunne Higgs is one of the State’s finest bench officials, having served since 2002, and in that time, officiating at more than 620 games.
Additionally, Higgs was appointed Bench Manager for the Netball World Cup in Sydney in 2015, and also for the Australia v New Zealand Test Match in Perth in 2015.
She has been the Bench Manager for the Australian Netball League and also for Suncorp Super Netball , and prior to that in the ANZ Championship.
Higgs’ dedication to the game is unparalleled, first getting involved with the sport through her daughters.
Netball WA President Deane Pieters congratulated the duo on their Life Membership.
“These two ladies embody the qualities we seek in our Life Members,” Pieters said.
“They’ve both worked tirelessly to reach the levels they have, and their continued strong advocacy of netball in Western Australia has made them most worthy of our highest individual honour.”
“We are indebted to both Jill and Shaunne for their tremendous contributions to netball in Western Australia.”
Unable to attend today’s AGM, Higgs will be presented with her Life Membership pin at the opening WANL fixture of 2019.
Jill Powell and Shaunne Higgs become the 97th and 98th Life Members respectively.
