Western Australia has had a strong start to the 2017 National Netball Championships, with both the 17U and 19U sides recordings wins on the opening day of the tournament.
The 17U team went through Day 1 undefeated, beating New South Wales by 31-21, before backing up their strong performance in the second round, defeating Tasmania 38-16.
In the opening game, 17U Captain Shantelle Tassone led by example in the goal circle making the most of the interceptions by defenders Eli Johnstone and Western Sting defender Sunday Aryang, while Riley Culnane was relentless in the defensive circle.
The second match saw WA assert their authority against the Tasmanians, opening up a six goal lead at the first break, before extending the margin to 14 goals at half time.
Strong combinations and shooting saw the West Australians skip out to a 22 goal victory.
In the 19U division, WA overcame a slow start against Tasmania in the opening game to record a 36-29 victory, before falling to Victoria 40-19.
After trailing by one goal at quarter time, WA asserted their authority against the Tasmanians in the second half, outscoring them 12 goals to five to lead by six goals at the main break.
With Olivia Lewis flying at every ball, WA never looked back, running out seven goal victors.
The second game of the opening day saw WA fail to capitalise on a number of forced turnovers against Victoria.
After trailing by nine goals at half time, Victoria asserted their authority in the second half outscoring WA 22 goals to 10 to run out 21 goal victors.
WA now take on Queensland and South Australia in the 19U age group, while the 17U side will take on Victoria and the ACT.
