NAIDOC Netball Carnival set to soar

Netball WA is calling for registrations for the Perth NAIDOC Netball Carnival – the largest event of its kind in Australia.

As part of NAIDOC week celebrations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander netballers from across WA are invited to participate in the annual NAIDOC Netball Carnival.

Held at the State Netball Centre on July 10 and staged in conjunction with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, the NAIDOC Netball Carnival is both an opportunity to introduce Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander netballers to competitive netball, as well as a platform to increase awareness and education around health promotion, health prevention and care benefits for Indigenous people.

Now in its 16th year, the Carnival has boasted enormous growth since it was first held with 20 teams in 2004.

More than 100 teams competed in 2018 and another bumper turnout is expected this year.

The age divisions include Suncorp NetSetGO, 12U, 14U, 16U, 18U, four open divisions and a Masters division.

NAIDOC week runs from July 7-14 with the 2019 theme “Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together”.

Netball WA General Manager of Community Netball Liz Booth encouraged teams to register by the deadline, Monday, July 1.

“The Perth NAIDOC Netball Carnival is a huge event on the annual Netball WA calendar and we want as many people to be a part of it as possible,” Booth said.

“More than 3,000 people passed through the gates last year with teams travelling from across the State to proudly represent their communities.”

“It is always a wonderful celebration of Indigenous culture and achievement and we can’t wait for the 2019 instalment.”

Can’t get to the Perth NAIDOC Carnival? Netball WA is also proud to stage the Midwest NAIDOC Netball Carnival in Geraldton on July 5 and 6 and the Northwest NAIDOC Netball Carnival in Broome on July 28.

Netball WA thanks Healthway – promoting the Go for Fuel & Play message; the Gold Industry Group; the Insurance Commission of WA – promoting the Belt Up campaign to wear seatbelts and be safe on our roads; the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries; and Community TAB.
